“I was automatically in love with my GoMotion light”.
When I first used the GoMotion Sternum kit, it was as if I was snowshoeing with a big headlight on my chest. “That thing makes you look like Ironman with his ‘glowing repulsor’ heart,” my snowshoeing buddy said. Of course, nerdy comment aside, I did feel like Ironman; I discovered that an LED light makes the surrounding snow glow. This nifty “glowing” effect comes in handy around dusk, when the sun drops below the mountains and darkness starts to set in. I was automatically in love with my GoMotion light. Every snowshoer needs one of these, in case it does get dark during a snowshoe outing.
GoMotion designed the Sternum Luxeon LED Kit for hikers and endurance runners who want to use their existing packs when hiking or running in low-light conditions. The Kit features a high-output 1- or 3-Watt Luxeon LED with separate battery box and hard-wired power cord for quick mounting to shoulder straps at chest level by two Velcro straps.
Here’s something that caught my eye yesterday, on day one of Outdoor Retailer:
GoMotion, makers of body-mounted LED lights, is introducing the Waist Light Kit for fall 2009. The Waist Light Kit is a light that easily attaches to the front of your current waist hydration or lumbar pack, or any pack with a 1.5″ to 2″ wide belt, allowing you to run, hike, walk, ski, or snowshoe in low-light conditions without a headlamp.
The GoMotion Waist Light Kit, shown attached to the front of a waist pack. The Waist Light Kit mounts over the current pack’s buckle or belt strap by two Velcro straps, and is easy to adjust or remove. It will come in both a 1-watt model and a rechargeable 3-watt model and features a low-profile Luxeon LED with multiple functions including: a beam whose angle can be adjusted 95 degrees by tilting, adjustable beam width, and three brightness levels.
The light runs on three AA batteries and has a battery life indicator. It will even knock itself down from the highest to lowest setting if you’re running out of batteries, so you won’t get stuck out in the dark.
The 1-watt Waist Light Kit will retail for $59.95.
The 3-watt Waist Light Kit will retail for $89.95.
Both models will be available in September of 2009.
GoMotion also offers a Sternum Light Kit that attaches to backpacks or hydration vests, and light vests and a belt for road and trail runners. For more info on GoMotion: www.gomotiongear.com
Innovations include the Go Motion Sternum light, Blackburn Flea bike lights, Black Diamond Orbit Lantern and Nite Ize SpokeLit.
If you’re always worrying that there aren’t enough hours in the day to safely complete your workout or human-powered commute to work, lighten up. A number of innovative new sports lights for biking, hiking and trail-running can help you stretch out the short days of winter and go deep into the night in summer.
Go Motion Sternum light
This light for trail-runners and hikers attaches to the front straps of a backpack, casting a chest-high beam.
Likes: Relief for those who find a headlamp irritating. The 3-watt LED casts a moderately strong beam, which can be adjusted from wide to narrow with a rotary dial. Three AA batteries fit in a case that you put in your backpack. A bright-red warning light flashes from the battery case.
Twice a year, the outdoor industry floods the market with the newest innovations in materials and designs. At the Outdoor Retailer Show, held in August in Salt Lake City, many products highlighted were simply “new and improved.”
But there were a few truly innovative finds, and products that were just plain sensible.
We’ve compiled a list of some of this year’s standouts for all seasons. Most of these are available now, but others will be showing up in the next couple of months.
“Extend the day” is this company’s motto, and we agree. With this powerful 3-watt LED lamp, there’s no need to stop running (its target sport, though it would work great for hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing, etc.). Designed to attach comfortably across the straps of any backpack (much like a typical sternum strap), the light casts a perfectly angled beam, maximizing shadows for optimal contrast while leaving hands and head free. The bulb is super-bright and lasts several hours.
